Today, the traditional dedication to the art of winemaking continues under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument.

Meerlust, with its historic manor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary is situated fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometers away. The Estate is uniquely positioned for the production of wines with exceptional complexity and character. In the summertime, ocean breezes and evening mists roll in from the coast to cool the vineyards.

The grapes ripen slowly, thus achieving full, concentrated varietal flavours. The soil consists of predominantly deep, well drained Hutton and Clovelly soil types, affording the vines excellent drought resistance and an ideal substrata for producing concentrated, complex wines.
One hundred and ten hectares are planted with varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

1996 heralded a new era for the region of Darling with the establishment of the private cellar: Darling Cellars. With the unique terroir and recent demarcation of the Darling district, the focus has been on wines which are region and varietal true. About 20 shareholders produce grapes from a total of ±1500ha, averaging 5 tons/ha.

The cool and temperate West Coast climate lends itself to a variety of different micro- and mesoclimates which, along with the different soil types, lead to unique grapes which we guide into even more unique wines. Having 99% of all vineyards dry land and roughly the same percentage bush vine (i.e. not trellised), this is as close to what nature intended for grapes to be as one can get. This all culminates into wines which are true to the terroir from which they come and are true to the identity which we have crafted over time for our wines. Investment continues in the winery and cellar with some of the most modern and up to date winemaking equipment in our industry today. A state of the art bottling line, new presses, a barrel maturation cellar, replanting of vineyards to include noble cultivars all contribute to our advances in contemporary winemaking...

It is a winery in transition, where the pioneering spirit prevalent in a young democracy such as South Africa's, combines with a winemaking tradition of more than 300 years.Like the country, it embraces the new and old world, providing stability, yet not afraid to tackle the challenges of the 21st Century.

In the past 6 years Boland wines have proved beyond doubt they are able to compete successfully on the international stage. The winery, through Chief Cellar Master, Altus le Roux won the coveted 2001 International Wine & Spirits Competition "Winemaker of the Year" , being awarded the Robert Mondavi Trophy in London. At the same time Boland won the IWSC trophies for the World's Best Shiraz and the World's Best Cabernet Sauvignon, respectively with its 1998 Shiraz (Chris Hancock Trophy) and 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon (Warren Winarski Trophy). This, together with a silver for its 1999 Pinotage and two bronze medals, resulted in the winery being named the Best South African Producer in this competition.

In 2003 Boland again received the Chris Hancock Trophy for World's Best Shiraz at the IWSC for Boland Shiraz 2000. The last 6 years has seen Boland garner a host of medals and awards at international and domestic competitions, highlighting the quality of the wines it offers. It is teamwork which has brought
this success about. Under the guidance of Chairman Jannie le Roux and Altus le Roux (not related), who is also the MD, the company has moved from being a producer for large wholesalers, to a purveyor of fine wines.

The vision of the board to establish Boland as a quality producer - which is able to supply reasonable volumes of wines - means the company is moving away from purely supplying large wholesalers and moving towards developing its own brand.

Click below to buy Wines online, delivered to your door.

Anthony’s philosophy is that wine is an integral and joyful part of everyday life. His unbridled enthusiasm, sense of fun and pure pleasure in growing vines, vinifying wine, and presenting it to wine lovers in all manner of exciting guises, pervades Anthony Smook Wines. His small range of six cultivars grace the shelves and tables of the finest establishments and he is one of a growing number of boutique wine farmers: focused and independent.

Anthony keeps the craft of winemaking simple: Going back in winemaking is the way forward, which translates into a belief in the basic, traditional methods of winemaking, aided by modern equipment and design, including sorting tables, basket presses, wooden fermenters and small tanks for individual vinification of particular cultivars. The result is a portfolio of wines that falls deftly mid-way between New World fruit richness and showiness, and Old World tannic structure and elegance.

An area that is covered with fynbos, now almost wholly recovered from a devastating fire in 2004, this is Elandsjacht, the retreat that Anthony Smook and his family escape to after a busy week. It is here that his passion for wine and the outdoors meet in perfect symmetry. In an area that is rich in farming and natural resources it seems right that this small vineyard should look down on the bustling communities below whilst gently producing a wine that will reflect the heritage of the area.

We had intended on not planting any vines for 2007, but will re-evaluate this depending on market developments. From 2008 we will be planting 10ha each year, which is what we will need for replacement. As we have available land, we can increase our plantings should the market indicate.

Our main emphasis will be on Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. However, we also intend experimenting with small quantities of varietals such as Barbara, Sangiovese, Tempalino and Mouvedre. One is allowed to add15% to a varietal without having to change the name and we believe small additions (5-10%) can compliment a varietal by giving it more complexity and structure.

ABOUT OUR WINES

Asara Wine Estate prides itself on being "Out with the Ordinary"...
We strive to produce a range of award winning wines that can please a diverse collection of palettes - from the discerning wine connoisseur to the every day wine drinker - and have become, according to the renowned John Platter wine guide "one of the Cape's latest success stories..."

The name Asara is derived from the names of the African gods of Earth, Sun and Sky - Astar, Asis & Asase - expressing the harmony in nature's elements which is reflected in our range of wines. This perfect union gives the wines from Asara their unique character.

At Asara, we focus on the extra-ordinary, the quest for perfection and a complete delight in sheer indulgence. This approach is followed right through the entire winemaking process - starting with the careful harvesting of our grapes, through to the cellaring and maturation of our wines. The proof in this philosophy can be found in each and every bottle. Our production is approximately 65% red and 35% white wines, led by our flagship Bell Tower Collection and all of our wines are grown, matured and bottled on the estate, with 137ha under vine. Our entire range of wines offers exuberant structure and taste, beautifully balanced with undeniable depth, allowing for a celebration of the senses...

The Wines of Avondale

Organic is not just a buzz word at Avondale. It's about promoting life and preserving a living system. It’s about treating our vines like indigenous trees. Pioneering viticulturist, Johnathan Grieve says: “We are returning our soil to its original, vibrant, natural state through Bio-LOGIC, a gentle integration of old practices with new science.” Owned by the Grieve family, Avondale is committed to the creation of fine natural wines.

As we believe in the balance of nature, we adopted the Albrecht system of soil balancing. It involves the balancing of soil nutrients and correcting imbalances that developed over the years. This is obviously a very intricate process and requires a lot of input in the beginning, but there are rewarding results with regard to soil life, soil structure and plant growth.

The system also changes one’s philosophy about fertilizing and types of nutrients. The key is that each input should encourage soil life. We try to focus on natural predators and natural fungicides, like the following:

* A flock of ducks controls the whole of Avondale’s snail population, eliminating the need for chemical snail pellets. The ducks are effective and cost-saving.
* We use two Bacillus strains, one against worms and the second to combat downy mildew. Both these bacteria occur naturally and are very specific in their action.
* The predatory wasp Coccidoxenoidses perminutes or mealy bug destroyer has been released on the farm during the last three seasons and has been a great success against mealy bug.

The Auction Crossing wines are produced in the Hex River Crossing Private Cellar and are a result of a collaboration between De Villiers Graaff, AJ Reyneke and Leon Dippenaar.

When De Villiers Graaff and AJ Reyneke bought the table grape farm "The Pines" in 2003, they found that the old wine cellar next to the old Cape Dutch homestead was still in good working order.

The cellar had originally been build in 1938 and had been out of use for some 30 years. The new owners were enthusiastic to revive the cellar and joined forces with Leon Dippenaar who is the winemaker at Hex River Crossing Private Cellar. The old press and pumps were serviced, barrels ordered and grapes were sourced and the first wines were made in February 2004.

Our wine is the product of hands-on love and a single plot vineyard

We openly confess that our heart belongs to the vineyard. Throughout the year we manicure the canopy in endless hours to perfection, aiming at creating optimal conditions for perfect ripening.

At harvest, the bunches are carefully handpicked, with a stringent selection and sorting of the berries already in the vineyard before it is transported in small 15 kg crates, guaranteeing that only the best and undamaged fruit makes it into the cellar. Here, the fruit is controlled again on a sorting table, then destemmed, slightly crushed and finally fermented in stainless steel fermenters.

However, before fermentation has started, we generally “bleed” the mash, i.e. drain off some free run juice. This enhances the concentration of our main wine, while yielding some beautiful grape juice of top quality, which is then cold-fermented separately to become our popular Pink Merlot.
Malolactic fermentation and further maturation of our red wine takes place in small 225 l oak barrels selected from top French cooperages. After one year of barrel maturation, the different batches are carefully evaluated and blended in tedious series of blind-tasting, and the optimal combination will eventually make up our flagship wine Bein Merlot.

Avontuur Wine Estate is a producer of top-quality wines, particularly Reds. The soils, aspect and meso-climate, combined with the cool southeasterly winds from the nearby Atlantic Ocean in Summer, produce grapes of exceptional quality .

Picture it for yourself. Vine upon vine of ripening fruit, the shining Indian Ocean stretched out before you, green horse paddocks surrounded by white fences, Table Mountain in the distance, a sunny terrace and the gloriously rugged Helderberg Mountain behind you.

Avontuur Estate was bought by Tony Taberer in 1983. At that stage the farm was only 40 hectares in size, with Cinsaut and Steen making up the majority of the vineyards. These vines had been planted ten years earlier, along with a block each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage.
