Adoro

Adoro Wines were conceived and came into being in 2004, the outcome of a fortuitous crossing of divergent stars with a common objective. Two of these stars belong to South Africans Ian Naudé and Lucas de Kock; the third is a partnership in Speyside, Scotland, of two South Africans, Geoff Bell and Wayne Keiswetter, and a Scotsman, Billy Walker. The thread of this history reaches to the founding of the Benriach Distillery in 1898, a short lived enterprise with the misfortune of being launched on the brink of the Pattison Crash. At the time, Pattison Elder and Co., controlled by Robert and Walter Pattison, was Scotland’s largest purchaser of Scotch whiskies. This position led many of their suppliers to extend the company credit, unaware of Pattison’s looming financial implosion. By 1900, a wave of distilleries were going bankrupt, Benriach among them. Though it continued to supply malted barley from its malting operation to the surviving Longmorn Distillery, Benriach was otherwise inactive until acquired and renovated from ground up in 1965 by Glenlivet Distillers, Ltd. Production resumed until 1978, when Glenlivet and its owned distilleries were purchased by Seagrams, under which Benriach contributed to the Chivas Regal brand. When the winds of acquisition blew again in 2001 and Pernod Ricard took over Seagrams, Benriach was among four distilleries put on partial production and eventually closed in 2002.
In April of 2004 the distillery was bought by a partnership among Geoff Bell, Wayne Keiswetter and Billy Walker, one of the most respected master blenders in Scotland with a reputation built over three decades. Ian Naudé was brought into the fold to create Adoro, and brought Lucas de Kock with him. Adoro and Benriach are now both under the umbrella of the Aspen Freight Group.
